We were named Nordics Best Roaster 2026! But what is that, exactly?

During Nordic Coffee Fest in March, something we've dreamed of and worked incredibly hard for happened: Kaffa was crowned Nordics Best Roaster 2026! We couldn't be prouder to win this prestigious award among many talented industry colleagues from across the Nordic region.

But what exactly is Nordics Best Roaster, how is the winner chosen, and what does this mean for you, a lover of a good cup of coffee?

What is Nordics Best Roaster?

Nordics Best Roaster is perhaps the most refined and challenging test of coffee roasting craftsmanship we have here in the Nordics. The competition is a central part of Nordic Coffee Fest, and at its core, it's about the craft: extracting the absolute maximum potential, the purest flavor notes, and the best balance from every single coffee bean.

For us at Kaffa, who have been roasting specialty coffee in Oslo since 2005, this is a confirmation that our continuous focus on quality, sustainable origins, and precise roasting yields world-class results.

How is Nordics Best Roaster chosen?

The competition format itself is both technical and demanding. For a coffee enthusiast to understand the level, we can break down the process like this:

• Qualifying round: First, participants must pass through the narrow eye of a needle in a strict blind tasting. Only those with flawless roasting and outstanding flavor notes advance to the final.

• Task 1 - mandatory coffee: All roasters receive the exact same green coffee. This tests the roaster's ability to understand an unknown coffee and create the most optimal flavor profile.

• Task 2 - sourced coffee: We select a coffee we have sourced ourselves directly from our dedicated coffee farmers. This requires not only precision in the roasting process itself but a deep understanding of the raw material's quality, terroir, and different processing methods.

An inclusive coffee community

One of the most valuable aspects of this award is that the roasters themselves participate in evaluating each other's work. This creates a professional dialogue and mutual respect for the craft that characterizes the entire specialty coffee community.

At the same time, the public gets the opportunity to taste and vote for their own favorites! This makes the competition feel inclusive and accessible to everyone, whether you are an experienced barista or just enjoy your daily morning coffee.

When the winners are announced at the end of the festival, it's a celebration of the high standards in the Nordic coffee industry. For us, this is an important arena for inspiration, and a reminder that good craftsmanship tastes better.
